Thanks, David. I think disclosure laws may help in a number of areas. Google or Tesla may use your info but they must disclose that and they must offer the service without using your info for a reasonable fee.
Regarding Android/iPhone this is a job for anti-monopoly enforcement. I'd have to believe that an ISO project could standardize a single smartphone interface and support multiple competing providers using that non-proprietary interface. I suspect that the proprietary devices will eventually fade under that pressure.
As with all of this, it's a tough call but I do suspect that reasonable government and industry intervention may minimize these problems of entrapment.
