I typically use the word liberal (not capitalized) to imply it's much earlier meaning: one who is educated in the liberal arts - liberated from ignorance and capable of thinking clearly. In the case of the referenced articles, though, they are using "liberal" versus "conservative" more as signals than words so we have to guess a little at their intended meaning. Clearly I probably should have been more careful in structuring that sentence.
