So easy that you might not notice.
Have you felt puzzled about how smoothly we seem to have managed the transition from dopey Conservative Republicans to vicious Fascist Republicans? I know I have. I mean, they were happy to complain about everything, the way Conservatives do, but then suddenly they started actually doing things: striking down Roe vs. Wade, disabling the House of Representatives, threatening fist fights in the Senate. How did that happen so easily, almost as though it had always been that way?
While pondering this phenomenon one Saturday morning, I had a revelation. It’s a revelation that requires a bit of back story.
In my Conservatism Triptych I included a detailed discussion of Conservatism’s legacy of whining, whining about the most trivial of slights and warning about the horrible threats waged against all good people by nefarious others. Doctors are killing new-born babies. Mexicans are flooding across the border to steal your jobs. International Jewry is conspiring with everyone to steal everything. Any “other” will work but there are some others that keep on giving. Doctors killing babies was a classic. Conservatives milked that every year for all it was worth.
